An armadillo-like sphagesaurid crocodyliform

"The Armadillosuchus is only found in the state of São Paulo, and this has been a surprise, including the possibility of overcoming the idea that the crocodiles are only found in hot and humid climatic condition," said the journalists of the paleontologist UFRJ Ismar de Souza Carvalho.

"In this case, they are crocodiles that live in a climate very hot, dry and arid," he said. According to the researchers, the animal lived in the Cretaceous period, with daytime temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius. The animal lived in a region called the Bauru Basin, covering the interior of the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Paraná.

This lineage reveals how diverse was the morphology and ecology of terrestrial Crocodyliformes during the Late Cretaceous of Gondwana.
