What is cloud computing?

It's a network made of hundreds of thousands, cheap hetergeneous servers, each not much more powerful than the PCs we have in our homes. It stores staggering amounts of data, including numerous copies of the World Wide Web.

"Cloud computing offers almost unlimited computing power and collaboration at a massive scale. With Force.com Platform-as-Service, we are providing the necessary building blocks to make cloud computing real for the enterprise."

"Cloud computing, or Platform-as-a-Service, has enormous potential for the enterprise," said Salesforce.com Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff in a statement.

At the Search Engine Strategies Conference earlier this month, Schmidt described the “old” client/server computing business model, which he characterizes as “largely invented by Oracle”:
It starts with the premise that the data services and architecture should be on servers. We call it cloud computing – they should be in a ‘cloud’ somewhere. And that if you have the right kind of browser or the right kind of access, it doesn’t matter whether you have a PC or a Mac or a mobile phone or a BlackBerry or what have you – or new devices still to be developed – you can get access to the cloud…

What is more, Google's system never ages. When its individual pieces die, usually after about three years, engineers pluck them out and replace them with new, faster boxes.

Many companies such as Google,IBM,HP,Apple are investing to build large data centers that students can tap into over the Internet to program and research remotely, which is called “cloud computing.”

Several elements are required for cloud technologies to enable an “Everything-as-a-Service” economy:
* A shared cloud infrastructure that provides enterprise-grade security, scalability and quality of service.
* A development environment that makes it easy for enterprise application developers who are used to creating small standalone applications to in turn deliver secure- multi-tenant applications horizontally scalable to millions of users.
* An operating environment that seamlessly delivers and updates Cloud services without impacting user experience.
