How to secure an HP printer

You buy a modern HP printer, but you need a smart system adminstrator in order to secure it for you. Remember, hackers are waiting for an opportunity. Don't be
misleading by the fact that HP printers are secure because it is expensive. Don't be
miseading by the fact HP is the actually leading market.

Simple things can happen if you don't take a precaution before make the printer available your site. First of all, you can't just set a password and assign the task as completed. No, no. There are more to be done, otherwise you can expect that:
1. Unwanted print jobs can be processed from a remote site.
2. Due to item #1 you are at risk of waste tonner and paper unnecessarily
3. A remote user can store suspect files on your printer's disk and make it available via HTTP(very easy procedure), because the printer acts as a webserver too.
4. You can find your printer dead or chash, since anyone can download a firmware on HP site and procedure an remote upgrade via EWS.
5. Some auth process use simple 64Base encryptation, if someone has access to LAN, it can be ease to hack the passord(if set)
6. Well, so far so good. There are other things, but they don't came on mine right now
7. A remote user can delete files necessary for the printer functioning.

So here what you shoud to to secure your laserjet printer.

1. Set your admin password on settings tab->security menu
2. Make print page unavailable by unselecting print page option on security page
3. Go to network tab(Security Authorization/Access control) an turn on Access Control Lists (ACL) which allow you to specify which IP addresses on your network are allowed access to the device. If the list is empty, then any system is allowed access.
4. Go to network tab Security mgnt protocols and turn on https protocol by selection Encrypt All Web Communication. Choose the high level option for encriptation
5. Update your printer firmware ( download from HP site the RFU and use the print page. Just print the RFU file in order to upgrade)
6. Update you jetdirect card firmware ( network tab/Other Settings/ firmware upgrade)

Now you can chill out a bit. Your printer is more secure than never.
